Small, quiet, low-power machines that make sensible home lab nodes - for Proxmox, Docker, a Plex or file server, or a three-node cluster that fits on one shelf.

For a home lab you are usually optimising for RAM, storage flexibility, idle power and noise - not raw single-core speed. An off-lease business machine gives you more memory capacity and better build quality per dollar than a comparably priced new consumer mini PC, and it uses standard parts you can actually replace.
RAM is almost always the first thing you run out of, well before CPU.
These chassis have two SODIMM slots, so memory is the easiest and cheapest thing to change later. Buy the machine for its CPU generation and its expansion options, then add memory as your needs grow.
Most of these models take an M.2 NVMe drive and a 2.5" SATA drive at the same time. That is the configuration you want: NVMe for the hypervisor and VM disks, SATA for bulk storage or backups. If you are planning ZFS, remember it will happily consume whatever RAM you give it.
Three small nodes are often a better home lab than one large one - you get to practise the thing that actually matters (quorum, migration, failover) rather than running a single box you are afraid to reboot. Proxmox wants at least three nodes for a proper quorum. Because these machines are cheap, small and quiet, buying three matched units is realistic in a way that three full towers is not.
These are 65W-class external-brick machines that idle far below that figure, which is the reason they are popular as always-on hardware - the difference between an idle mini PC and an idle tower shows up on an annual electricity bill. Actual draw depends on CPU generation, drive count and workload, so treat any single published number with suspicion, including ours. If you want a figure for a specific unit before buying, ask us and we will measure the one you are looking at.

If the plan is a router or firewall rather than a hypervisor, the requirements change - you need more than one network port. See firewall and router appliances.
