Why buy used network gear

Switches and routers age far better than computers. There is no operating system to fall behind, no battery to degrade, and a managed switch from five years ago still moves gigabit frames exactly as fast as a new one. What you lose is warranty and the newest management features; what you save is usually 50-70% off new pricing.

The main things worth checking on used gear are PoE budget, fan condition and whether the management interface is reachable. We check those before anything is listed.

PoE budget matters more than port count

A "24-port PoE switch" does not mean 24 devices at full power. Every switch has a total watt budget shared across its ports. A camera might draw 5-12W, an access point 10-25W. Add up what you actually plan to power and compare it against the budget rather than the port count - running out of watts is the most common surprise with PoE switches.

Managed, smart or unmanaged

Unmanaged switches just pass traffic. Smart and managed switches add VLANs, QoS, link aggregation and a web interface - which is what you need if you are segmenting a network, running VoIP, or separating cameras and guest traffic from your main LAN.

Condition and testing

Decommissioned rack equipment usually shows wear - rack rash, scratches, and old asset-label residue. We describe that honestly rather than photographing the good side. Function is what matters on this class of hardware, and every unit is tested before it goes on sale. Cosmetic condition is stated on each listing.

Everything here is covered by the standard 30-day BM IT Center warranty, and our shipping and returns policy applies as normal.
